DIARY

The team is now safely home after a very successful recce in France and enjoying a well-earned rest before starting on the UK sections later in September.  Everyone they met in France was very enthusiastic about the pilgrimage, offering all sorts of help, and the route is coming together well.  A few more photographs were […] Read more...

Today we came to Jouarre by way of Meaux, Bossuet’s diocese. The cathedral is bright and beautiful. The Bishop’s palace nearby overlooks a lovely garden designed by Le Notre and is surrounded by Gallo-Roman city walls, on top of which there is the Bishop’s little pavilion, in which he wrote and prayed. There is also an […] Read more...

The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Amiens is a Roman Catholic cathedral and seat of the Bishop of Amiens. It is situated on a slight ridge overlooking the River Somme in Amiens, the administrative capital of the Picardy region of France, some 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Paris. It is the 19th largest church in the world. Medieval cathedral builders were trying to maximize […] Read more...

Yesterday we left Wisques via the nuns monastery, where Mother Abbess and a young English-speaking nun whose mother was English entertained us in lively fashion. No-one was in the diocesan office at Arras, so we went in search of the grave of Br. Michael’s great-uncle, killed in 1917 near Vimy Ridge. First we visited the […] Read more...

Which way to turn at the roundabout? After some very bendy roads, an unwelcoming restaurant and a walk in the woods with the monks in the afternoon, following the migrants’ route we reach Wissant 20 miles from Calais.  Another rather hot day. Noisy mosquitoes at night, but no malaria! Tomorrow off towards Amiens. Read more...

After yesterday’s blow-out in Reims, having changed the wheel, we contacted Avis who were literally just round the corner, we went there and got a new car, quickly and easily, very impressive service. Went for a very nice lunch. Then to Diocesan office, TWO Vicars General, one leaving office, dusty and in shorts, clearing up and out, […] Read more...

“Champagne to Cathedral”!  After a few days of silence from the team (due to lack of Wi-Fi access), a gloriously sunny day started in the Champagne fields of Veuve Clicquot with Marty and Robbie walking slower than usual taking in the sights! In the meantime Father Giles and Brother Michael set off in pursuit of […] Read more...

Today we left Flavigny, after a friendly chat with Abbot Antoine, Robbie and Marty navigating from the back seat, the lady of the sat nav having been relegated to redundancy.  Our goal was Val Croissant, not on our maps, but believed to be in the area of Saulieu, rendered by our polyglot chief navigator as […] Read more...

Another excellent day on the road if somewhat wet! The route continues to look good and campsites and village halls are being visited. Decisions on which to use will be made once the bigger picture emerges. A visit to the Vicar General of Burgundy, Eric Millot proved very productive and all pilgrimage activities in the […] Read more...

A great day of walking and briefing. From their initial base at Abbaye Saint-Joseph de Clairval in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain the party have walked and spent time with authorities such as the local Gendarmerie. They are over the moon with everything and much further on with planning than expected, both on the ground viz. tracks, etc and […] Read more...
